HVAC System Noise Paths

Presentation Description

Understanding noise paths in HVAC systems can be challenging in designing for all buildings.  Considering HVAC sounds can have a dramatic impact on occupant comfort and experience, and HVAC attenuating strategies can have significant cost and fan energy impacts, identifying critical noise paths and how to treat them is essential to system design.   

ASHRAE Applications Handbook published example noise pathways and mitigation strategies.  HVAC driven noises such as noise in supply duct, duct breakout noise, and return air noise are all reviewed and detailed in the ASHRAE example(s).  This session explores those examples and compares scenarios of design strategies to determine which are more or less helpful and elaborates on the acoustical science of each scenario.

Jeff Teel, The Institute of Noise Control Engineers (INCE)

Jeff Teel has over 20 years of design experience in acoustics. He consults with clients on architectural acoustics, building systems noise, and vibration control for projects across the nation. Along with his extensive field testing experience, Jeff provides feasibility testing, community noise studies, and expert witness services. Jeff is currently a member of The Institute of Noise Control Engineering (INCE) where he shares his knowledge and experiences with like-minded people in the profession, as well as helps promote and expand the acoustical consulting industry to the public. Jeff also regularly presents on topics related to acoustics for clients and industry organizations.
